Notes
How did the early Church meet each others needs?
• Generously sold property & possessions (Acts 2:45, 2 Co 8:2-4)
• Did not fall into asceticism (1 Sa 2:7, Eph 2:8)
• Gave as there was a need
Why did the early Church meet each others needs this way?
• They wanted to give (2 Co 8:2-4). Not an obligation
• They loved the church & its members (Acts 2:42-47)
• They loved God and Jesus' teaching from Apostles
• They were filled and led by the Holy Spirit
What does it mean for us?
• Was radical then. Is applicable to us now
• Was not Church's idea but Jesus model (Php 2:14-15)
• We are rich, but Macedonians gave out of poverty anyway
• Attitude to money closely linked to spiritual lives
Key reasons it is still relevant?
• Attitude to money closely linked to spiritual lives
• God cares about what we do with our money (Mar 12:41, Luke 16:13)
• It is God's money (Psa 50:10, Deu 8:17-18). We are looking after it/stewarding it for him.
Questions to ask / positives of giving?
• Where are we storing our treasures? (Mat 6:19-21)
• Can invest in heaven or this passing world
• Heaven = wise investment
• We are reconciled to God for eternity (John 3:16)
• Where do you want your heart to be? (Mat 6:21)
• Our hearts follow our money
• CS Lewis "He who has God and everything has no more than he who has God alone."
Conclusion (1 Tim 6:10-12)
